Beethoven's Birthday

Beethoven's birthday today
but there's no
music in this city,
only the rumblings of trailer
trucks, the hissings
of smokestacks spewing soot.

No robins chirping or children
playing;
no wolves howling or
water splashing; no notes rising
from violin strings.

Only this wind
rushing, like a jilted bride
from the altar,
through the leafless trees
blowing dirt and dark clouds
into heaven, and sounding
like it might sound at the end
of time.
